From beads, buttons, shells, ribbons, yoyos, silk ribbon embroidery to plastic bags and broken glass, these quilts showcase many types of embellishments. What are the current trends in quilt embellishment? What additional layers could you apply to your wallhangings or wearable art to spice them up?

Amy Stewart Winsor, Cary, NC, has many ideas to share with you in this slide show. Embellished quilts were featured in the exhibit she curated in May 2002 at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary, NC, which was entitled "Art Quilts: Encrustations". Amy will present a slide show of many of these quilts and others. The quilts include embellishments such as ornaments, beading, buttons, three-dimensionality, embroidery, couching, additional layers of fabric, and many other techniques.

Amy curated the Page-Walker Art Quilts Exhibit from 2000-2002. A nationally juried show, it has been exhibited at the International Quilt Festival in 2001 and 2002.

THE FOLLOWING QUILTS ARE INCLUDED IN THIS SLIDE LECTURE

In 2002, the exhibit was entitled, “Encrustations”, a pun on the word “encrusted”. I was the curator and juror, and all 57 quilts were chosen because of two criteria: they had to appeal to me visually and they had to have a significant amount of embellishment

2002 Encrustations exhibit, defined "embellishment" as a three-dimensional object which was attached to a quilt by sewing or gluing, etc. I have permission from the artists to show you these slides
