YEAR MADE: Satin quilt top made by Christine Clarkson Stewart in the 1980’s.
Embellishments and finishing done by her daughter, Amy Stewart Winsor, in 2004, specifically for the "I Remember Mama" juried exhibit, which featured quilts made by at least two generations of mothers/daughters or mothers/sons.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Accepted into the “I Remember Mama” special exhibit at International Quilt Festival, 2004, the international travelling exhibit, and featured in the book, "I Remember Mama" by Karey Bresenhan, released fall 2005.

FABRICS: Polyester satin quilt top, embellished with squares of frayed fabrics, including commercially dyed silk dupioni, silk shantung, rayon suiting, lame, silk organza, metallic mesh, brocade, velvet. Also handdyed cheesecloth, drapery and upholstery fabrics, recycled sweaters, eyelet lace, canvas, and handpainted needlepoint canvas.

THREADS: Cotton, rayon

EMBELLISHMENTS: Beads, hand embroidery, stacked frayed fabrics.

TECHNIQUES:Squares were sewn down with machine zigzag using rayon thread, also by hand with handdyed perle cotton or commercial embroidery floss. Beaded and embellished by hand using beads, charms, sequins, and recycled jewelry.

ABOUT THE QUILT: Starting with a quilt top made by my mom in the 1980’s (see photo below), I added embellished squares of frayed fabrics.
My happiest memories of childhood are the hours I spent reading. I am thankful for my mother’s willingness to provide me with library books by the hundreds. Because this quilt reminds me of a Persian carpet, the title, “Magic Carpet Ride” refers to the way that reading those books carried me away to far off lands.
